Description of works:
Wates Construction led the PFI Consortium and the contract was to provide Essex County Council with three secondary schools in Clacton. Two existing schools have been refurbished with new build blocks and one school is a total new build. Aqua was responsible for providing the mechanical and electrical services along with the sprinkler, security, fire alarm and data systems. Site works commenced early in 2004 with completion scheduled for summer 2005. Various buildings and specific areas have been completed and handed over for use by the schools throughout the contract period.

The schools will provide educational facilities for both pre-school children and the post 16 age group and will cater for people with disabilities with dedicated areas such as the purpose built Nursery and Sixth Form areas. There are also new and upgraded facilities for the community with Sports Halls, Swimming Pool, Fitness Suite, Library, Cyber Cafes and Conference facilities, all of which form part of the contract. Teacher groups have been involved with the decision making process from the concept stage through the design phase and during construction process. Students along with local artists have provided permanent features at all 3 schools. These schools will and continue to serve the community for many years to come and with the input from all concerned they should meet the modern educational requirements for both young and old alike.
